SKIN LIKE A GRATER

SKIN LIKE A GRATER

Keratosis pilaris, also known colloquially as chafing skin, usually occurs for the first time in childhood and primarily affects girls and young women. From a medical point of view, keratosis pilaris is harmless, but for many sufferers it is an enormous burden due to the unsightly appearance of the skin. The right skin care can help.

Harmless keratin deposits
If the keratinization of the skin around the hair follicles is disturbed and nodules appear as a result, this is known as keratosis pilaris. This is not a disease, but a probable genetic disorder that occurs in up to 80% of all children and adolescents. The nodules are harmless and are caused by deposits of keratin - a natural, endogenous protein found in the cornea, hair and nails.

Skin like a chafing iron
The severity of chafing skin varies from person to person, which means that the associated negative effects also differ significantly. Those affected usually complain of rough skin on the outside of the upper arms, on the front of the thighs, on the buttocks and/or on the cheeks. The skin in these areas feels like it is being rubbed. In addition, the nodules are perceived by many as unsightly - especially when they appear on the face. This in turn can be a psychological burden.

All skin types affected
Unlike other disorders and skin diseases, light and dark skin types are equally affected by keratosis pilaris. However, the keratin deposits differ in that the nodules on light skin tend to have a reddish tinge, whereas they tend to appear brown with increasingly darker skin tones. In all ethnic groups, chafing skin is completely harmless and usually disappears on its own, which is why adults are affected much less frequently.

Cosmetic support
There is currently no cure, nor is one considered medically necessary. However, there are a number of measures that promise relief for anyone who wants to take cosmetic action against chafed skin:

  • Cleaning
The affected areas of skin should be cleaned regularly and thoroughly with pH-neutral soap or washing gel. Click through our products - you're sure to find the right one to cleanse your skin.

  • Care
Moisturizing care with creams or lotions containing uric acid (urea) can refine the skin texture. Care products with salicylic acid can also help (e.g. [W]ASH AWAY Purifying Gel Cleanser).

  • Peelings
On the one hand, superficial calluses can be removed with peelings at home. On the other hand, regular treatment with fruit acid peels at the dermatologist or beautician is recommended. This can open clogged pores and remove deep-seated cornifications.

  • Sun
Vitamin D is good for the soul and for the skin. Regular contact with the sun can strengthen the skin's resistance thanks to the positive effect of UV-A and UV-B radiation. Always make sure you have sufficient UV protection, e.g. BGS sunscreen (SPF 30).

  • Fluids
A good supply of moisture to the skin is essential. In addition to the right skincare, this can easily be achieved by drinking enough fluids in the form of water and unsweetened teas.

  • Microneedling or laser treatments
Very small needles or lasers are used to perforate the affected skin. This promotes the breakdown of keratin deposits on the one hand and the formation of healthy cells on the other.
